Designing and building a piece of furniture is an opportunity to create a functional sculpture that will live in a space, the functionality and esthetics of an object are closely linked. Each piece of wood often has its own structural and design characteristics that I incorporate in the piece. Sapwood may be used to enhance a line or a beautiful grain pattern may add strength as well ornament. |
My latest influences are Asian and Arts and Crafts as interpreted by Greene and Greene. I think that Greene and Greene add a measure of elegance to the earlier Arts and Crafts designs. James Krenov and the work of college of the Redwoods in California have also had a profound influence on me. I am also greatly inspired by the Art Deco work of Charles Renne Macintosh. I have developed my skills by studying other makers, attending workshops and, of course, trial and error. Just as important for me are the various carpenters, crafts persons, and boat builders I have had the privilege to know and work with over the years in my community . These individuals have given me the shop practice and knowledge to produce work that is practical and durable. |
